My Month: March 2008

Failure cartoon

This month’s Hugh MacLeod cartoon covers the subject of what might happen if I screw up AXA Elevate’s UI design! No pressure there then, and nothing that a couple of pints of SA can’t sort out. More about my March after the jump…

What am I doing?

  • Getting ready to move back down to central Bristol. Since the only pub closed (and a crap one at that), Aztec West has lost what little charm it had in the first place, so moving back down into town is a most welcome distraction, not least because I can go back to having lunch with Matt at The Artichoke
  • Thinking about taking the family down to London for an Easter break. We were going to head to the sun for a week, but I couldn’t get the flights (doh)…
  • Joining the IFP; didn’t fancy AIFA much!
  • Attending Dealers group conference on Portfolio Construction (see my review)
  • Still working on the PlanLab review; it’s jinxed, isn’t it?!

What I’m reading at the moment

  • The Shakespeare Secret (J L Carrell): Disappointing Da Vinci Code rip-off. Whoever picks this up after me (I leave ‘em on the train – my bit of literary recycling) will probably hate me for it!
  • The Woods (Harlan Coben): Mr Coben never disappoints, and this is another cracking novel. Some of the bit-part characters from his previous novels get bigger roles in this pacey thriller. Can we have Myron Bolitar back now, though…?

Websites that I’ve bookmarked recently

  • ascadnetworks: these guys provide the tech behind my extranet security & user management. Great product, excellent support; can’t ask for more, really.
  • C2MF: Paul Reznik pointed me towards this site during a chat at the Portfolio Construction conference; some very clever UI stuff on a solid technology base, developed by one of the guys responsible for IPACs renowned planning tools for advisers

What am I watching via YouTube on my iPhone

My playlist

Gone a bit safe this month:

  • Rockferry (Duffy): I twittered that this young lady was one to watch after seeing her on Jools Holland’s Hogmanay, and this debut album doesn’t disappoint
  • Legacy (BoyzIIMen): Don’t know why, but I found myself pressing the buy button in iTunes
  • Best of friends (Jools Holland): The bonus DVD material is just as much fun as the RnB
  • Metro Blue (Richard Elliot): a sax maestro that has a bit of grunt in the bag for when it’s needed, and this is a darn good album. Love the heavy brass (Elliot is ex-Tower of Power, so no surprise there), and the Stylistics homage! Elliot even gets Peter White, another of my playlist regulars, to guest on the bonus track…
